synopsis

Set in the expatriate community of Florence in 1938, young British widow Mary Panton travels to an Italian villa for some rest, only to find herself in the midst of a love triangle and political intrigue. When her older friend Sir Edgar asks her hand in marriage, then leaves her for a few days while she considers the proposal, Mary meets some provocative people at a dinner party and develops a relationship with an American man to whom she confides her dark secret.
