Spring Queen (NR)

synopsis

An annual pageant in Cape Town where the female factory workers who make the clothes we wear compete for the crown in front of 10,000 excited supporters. Created in the darkest days of apartheid, the event has a defiant subtext.
Following the stories of the ordinary women who become "Cinderellas for a night", this is a poignant exploration of how the pageant has affected their lives and, as textile manufacturing moves to China and causes many South African factories to close, it illuminates a society and a world in transition.
