synopsis

In early 2007 Powell’s Books spearheaded a new concept for the literary scene, incorporating film-making and literature to enhance the reading experience. The film project was dubbed Out of the Book (http://www.outofthebookfilms.com/). The premise of the project is to present a series of 30-minute films featuring renowned authors in their personal surroundings, discussing their latest works and giving audiences a glimpse of their lives. More expansive than traditional readings, the project aims to generate spirited discussion about great new books. The Out of the Book films are distributed through independent bookstores all over the country. For the second Out of the Book film, Powell’s features the late acclaimed historian David Halberstam and his last book, "The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War." McNally Robinson will host the premier screening of the film for members of the media and the public on November 11. The screening will be preceded by a dramatic reading from the work, and followed by a panel discussion with producer Dave Weich, members of the Korea veterans community, and others who know the author and his subject best.
