synopsis

Little known story of the extraordinary life of Bronislaw Pilsudski - a scientist, anthropologist and social activist. The older brother of Marshal Józef Pilsudski, involved in the preparations for the Tsar in 1887, after the discovery of which he was sentenced to death, changed to 15 years of hard work on the island of Sakhalin. "It's been a pleasant life for me that I can only compare to sleep. It came to me to wake up in such terrible circumstances, "he wrote to his father at the beginning of the exile. He quickly became interested in the natives of the Ainu tribes, the Orcs: he got to know their problems, learned to plant potatoes and preserve fish, thus protecting them from starvation. On his initiative, a school was established, in which he taught himself. There he also married a relative of one of the chiefs, with whom he had two children. With time, on the island of Hokkaido, he began researching the language and customs of the Ainu - he created records, dictionaries, made recordings on wax rolls. It is thanks to him that their cultural heritage has survived.
